Music, Movies, and Books in Our House

Everyone has their go-to playlist, favorite movie night picks, and a stack (or wish list) of books they love—or at least want to love. In our house, we’ve got a wide range of tastes, but it’s fun to see where we overlap and where we each bring something different to the table.

Mike’s Picks: Indie Rock & Willimon Wisdom

Mike is all about 90’s music—if it came out during the grunge, alt-rock, or pop-punk heyday, chances are it’s on his playlist. But his current favorite genre is Indie Rock. Think mellow guitar vibes, poetic lyrics, and just enough edge to keep things interesting.

When it comes to movies, Mike’s a fan of high-energy action and smart storytelling. John Wick and The Accountant are top of his list—films that mix intensity with just enough depth to keep you thinking. And for reading? Mike has been diving into books by Will Willimon, a theologian and pastor whose works help him articulate his faith, his calling, and his vision for the church. Easy to read and deeply reflective—what’s not to love?

Jenni’s Favorites: Grunge Vibes & True Crime Nights

Jenni listens to a wide mix of music, but she tends to gravitate toward Indie Rock and Grunge. (Maybe there’s a trend here?) Her playlist has everything from 90s guitar-heavy bands to today’s more mellow indie sounds.

Movies? Not really her thing. But give her a gripping true crime documentary or a good sci-fi series, and she’s all in. It’s the deep dives into real stories—or imaginative escapes into future worlds—that really grab her attention.

When she’s reading, you’ll find her flipping through articles and essays focused on health, food, and education. She’s always learning something new—especially when it comes to helping kids thrive.

The Kids: Pop Hits, Pixelated Adventures & School Reads

The kids are plugged into the current music scene, listening to whatever hits are trending—no particular genre loyalty here, just good beats and catchy hooks. Ruby especially loves Billie Eilish and Chappell Roan, finding something unique and expressive in their music.

Movies aren’t a huge deal to them either, but a recent family outing to the Minecraft movie was a win for everyone. It was one of those rare moments where everyone was engaged, laughing, and talking about it afterward—which, for a modern family, is kind of a big deal.

As for books, most of their reading happens through school assignments. They’re not big on reading for fun right now, but we’re holding onto hope that a few good stories might change that down the line.

Finding Connection in What We Enjoy

Our family’s tastes might vary—sometimes wildly—but it’s these small details that shape who we are. Whether we’re listening to the music of our own teenage years, discovering new artists through our kids, swapping thoughts on a documentary, or learning something from a well-written book, these are the things that give color to our conversations and depth to our relationships.

What kinds of music, movies, or books speak to your soul lately?
