VBS Mission Project: Birthday Bags for the Food Pantry

Each year during Vacation Bible School, we invite our kids and families to be part of a meaningful mission project. This summer, we’re continuing a beloved tradition by creating Birthday Bags for the GCS Food Pantry—a simple and joyful way to share God’s love and celebrate others!

Why Birthday Bags?
For many families who visit the food pantry, birthdays can be tough to celebrate. These bags add a special touch during a difficult season, helping families feel seen, cared for, and celebrated. When someone comes to the Food Pantry and presents their ID, if their birthday is coming up, they receive a Birthday Bag in addition to their regular food items. It’s a small gesture that brings big smiles—and it’s one our VBS kids have loved being part of year after year!

How You Can Help
We’ve provided a simple list of items that make up a Birthday Bag. You can choose to create a bag for an adult or child—feel free to make it generic or tailor it for a boy or girl. Most of the supplies can be found at Dollar Tree or similar stores, making this a fun and affordable way for your family to get involved.
The Basics for Each Bag:
  • Gift bag
  • Cake mix
  • Frosting
  • Birthday candles
  • Balloons
  • Ribbon
  • A small bottle of oil (if needed for the cake mix)
  • A couple sheets of tissue paper

Optional Extras:
If you'd like to go the extra mile, you can also include:
  • Birthday banner
  • Party hats
  • Crepe paper streamers
  • Noisemakers
  • Cups, plates, napkins
  • Plastic tablecloth

When to Bring Your Bags
We’ll be collecting Birthday Bags throughout the month of July. You can drop them off in the designated collection area at the church anytime during that month. In August, we’ll deliver all the bags to the GCS Food Pantry just in time to bless families for their special day.

Have Fun With It!

This project is a beautiful opportunity to teach children about kindness, giving, and the joy of celebrating others. Whether you fill one bag or several, know that you’re making a birthday a little brighter for someone in our community.
