Seeing the Long Game

We close out this week's devotions from the Book of Common Prayer back in the book of Psalms.
This Psalm is powerful when life is going every wrong way possible or when you feel like you've failed and there's no way to recover. If you need to cry to God, you can pray through this Psalm and feel much better. For today's sake, we will reflect on just a few verses.
But I keep praying to you, Lord,
hoping this time you will show me favor.
In your unfailing love, O God,
answer my prayer with your sure salvation.
Rescue me from the mud;
don’t let me sink any deeper!
Save me from those who hate me,
and pull me from these deep waters.
Don’t let the floods overwhelm me,
or the deep waters swallow me,
or the pit of death devour me. –Psalm 69:13-15

There are times when our sin causes us to feel disconnected from God. The result is to cry out and ask God to save us from ourselves. In my personal life, I have found that when I've waited on God the longest, it's because he's doing the most work. These times feel like I don't have his favor or he isn't listening.

The reality is he's listening, and he's working. I can't see the long game. As a person who looks far ahead, I am thankful that God does too. I wish sometimes he would include me in the long-term planning.

Questions to Ponder

  • What are you praying for that you haven't received an answer to?
  • What do you hope is in your future?
  • Is there anything you need to cry to God about?
