You Know Who

We don’t talk about much in today’s church–the evil one. Think about it for a moment. We usually don’t even call him the Devil but call him the evil one. It’s like saying his name is bad. It’s like in Harry Potter, how the world is afraid to say Lord Voldemort‘s name. People respond quickly and fearfully whenever Harry says, “Don’t say his name.” They call him “You Know Who” or “He Who Must Not Be Named.”

However, we have no reason to fear Satan’s power over us. James teaches us:
“So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.” –James 4:7-8 NLT

Once we accept Christ’s forgiveness and power, we can resist the Devil through Christ’s strength. All we must do is call upon Christ and rebuke Satan. At that moment, we can move forward in life with confidence, knowing we are free. Our devotion says this:
Acknowledge Satan’s activity, but don’t be intimidated by him. You can resist him in the power of God and by the blood of Jesus Christ. –The Red Sea Rules, by Robert J. Morgan (Rule 3)

I’m not saying everything that happens in life is because Satan is after us, but we do ourselves a disservice by acting like he has no power in this world. When you feel like the world is against you, stop and pray. Ask God to show you his power and to protect you from Satan’s interference. What’s the worse thing that could happen?

Questions to Ponder

  • When was the last time that you executed your power over the Devil in your life?
  • How do you usually respond when you’re tempted, or things happen negatively?
  • What is one way you can walk deeper in God’s power today?
