Seaside Prayers

We move on to Rule 4 this week: Pray! This is an easy rule to remember but isn’t as easy to do.
“The Israelites were in crisis in Exodus 14, and their seaside cry was urgent, united, unfeigned, but unbelieving.” –The Red Sea Rules, by Robert J. Morgan (Rule 4)

If we don’t believe that God will deliver us from our situation, then it doesn’t matter how much we cry out in urgency, and as a united group, we’ll not see God’s actions in the situation. Notice that I didn’t say God wouldn’t act…I said we wouldn’t see God work. Read what happened in Exodus 14:10:
“As Pharaoh approached, the people of Israel looked up and panicked when they saw the Egyptians overtaking them. They cried out to the Lord,” –Exodus 14:10 NLT

Israel cried out to God because they were panicked. We don’t see them trusting that God would deliver them, even though he had done so in Egypt already. When we focus on what is causing us to panic, we aren’t focusing on how God will answer our prayers. In my experience, God rarely answers my prayers how I anticipate he will. I’ve given up having expectations.

We must pray and believe God will come through without expecting him to do it any specific way.

Thoughts to Ponder

  • What was the last big thing you asked God for?
  • Did you expect God to give you what you prayed for?
  • What ended up happening?
