Faith or Feeling
When you’re scared, the hardest thing to do is step in the direction you’re afraid to go. That’s why we say: take it one step at a time. I have no idea where that phrase came from, but it comes in handy in many situations. For example, when you’re tired and have to walk up a big hill, you can tell yourself just one step at a time. Or, when doing something terrifying, you can think about it one step at a time.
“When you don’t know what to do next, cast out fear and seek light for the next step. Trust God for guidance in small increments; and if you can’t see what lies dimly in the distance, do what lies clearly at hand.” –The Red Sea Rules, by Robert J. Morgan (Rule 6)
Focusing on what’s right in front of us, not the entire thing, is a way to lessen anxiety and feeling overwhelmed. That’s not a new concept. Jesus also told us to break things down when he said to worry about today.

“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” –Matthew 6:34 NLT
When life feels too big, the obstacle too tall, or the enemy too strong, remember that God is with you every step. All you have to do is start walking. The first step can be small as long as you start stepping.

Thoughts to Ponder
- What do you do when you get overwhelmed by something?
- Do you have times that you feel so scared you can’t move?
- How do you encourage yourself in these situations?
