Affirm His Nearness

Being close to God has been talked about throughout our relationship with him. Take Genesis as an example:
“What’s more, I am with you, and I will protect you wherever you go. One day I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you.” –Genesis 28:15 NLT

In our United Methodist The Faith We Sing hymnal, there’s a song called “Just a Close Walk With Thee” written in 2001, author unknown. These are the words to the refrain:

Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Yet or so many of us, don’t feel like we can feel God or see him working. It all starts with intentionally seeking God and naming his presence around us. Today and the following devotions this week are focused on ways to do this.
“How can you master the practice of the presence of God? First, affirm His nearness in your heart.” –The Red Sea Rules, by Robert J. Morgan (Rule 7)

This statement may feel like it’s too simple. If so, then let’s add some scriptures to put into regular practice. I find that praying scripture helps when I feel unconnected to God. Try praying some of these:
  • Psalm 139:5-6
  • Philippians 4:5-6
  • Isaiah 41:10
  • Genesis 28:15
  • Acts 18:9-10
  • Hebrew 13:5

To affirm God’s presence, we must start with a daily practice of doing so. Even if you’re unsure you feel God or see God, affirm that God is there. Soon, you’ll start to know he is in the other ways.

If you’re not confident in your relationship with God, let’s grab a cup of coffee (in-person or virtual) and talk more.

Thoughts to Ponder

  • Right now, how close do you feel God to you?
  • Have you known anyone who talked as if God was always right there?
  • What goal can you set for drawing close to God?
