His Miraculous Ways
We’ve finally gotten to the part of Exodus 14 that everyone loves! God does his miracle. Granted, this isn’t the first miracle God performs in Exodus, and it’s not his last. However, the parting of the Red Sea stands out often because it’s such a dramatic image. Israel goes to sleep, afraid because Egypt’s army is closing in. The wind howls throughout the night. When they wake, they discover they’re no longer trapped.
“Then Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the Lord opened up a path through the water with a strong east wind. The wind blew all that night, turning the seabed into dry land. So the people of Israel walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on each side!” –Exodus 14:21-22 NLT
If you asked Moses at the moment, I don’t think he would have expected God’s solution to the problem at hand to have been the Red Sea. I expect Moses was looking for God to change Egypt’s mind and turn around. Or, maybe give them a bad stomach virus and send them all to the latrine.
Instead, God did something that no one could have expected.

“It was the Old Testament’s most dramatic object lesson, one of God’s greatest miracles. Its simple lesson: trust God to deliver in His own unique way.” –The Red Sea Rules, by Robert J. Morgan (Rule 8)
We will always be surprised if we “expect” God to do something specific. He will always act, but he rarely acts as we want him to.
We’ve all had God do miracles in our lives, but we haven’t paid attention to them because they were small. Today, stop and think about all the things God has done for you over the years.

Thoughts to Ponder
- What are you asking God for right now?
- Do you have an expectation of how he will answer your prayer?
- What's the last miracle you remember happening to someone you know?
