Singing our Praise

Moses and Miriam’s songs in Exodus 15 are the first recorded Praise songs in the Bible. Ever since Egypt, God’s people (Jews and Christians alike) have been singing our praises to God. We sing when things are good and when they are bad. Some of our most potent songs come from hard times in life.
“In the history of the Christian church, some of our greatest hymns have come in the darkest moments.” –The Red Sea Rules, by Robert J. Morgan (Rule 10)

David and others wrote the book of Psalms as the Jewish book of worship or the Jewish hymn book. They were all sung, so they are in the poetry format. They have a rhyme to their words. Take these words from Psalm 3 that speaks of God defending us from those who are against us:
“But you, O Lord, are a shield around me;
you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.
I cried out to the Lord,
and he answered me from his holy mountain.” –Psalm 3:3-4 NLT

In seminary, we sang the Psalms for an entire semester. The Seminary’s President’s Wife put all 150 songs to meter and matched them with hymn tunes so they could be sung. If you’d like to try it, here’s the link for Psalm 3.

Today, think of ways you can praise God through song. Try playing some Christian music or singing some hymns in the car. Or you can sing whatever comes to your heart. Let God move through you as you praise him for all he has done for you.

Thoughts to Ponder

  • When was the last time you sang something that wasn’t a song written by someone else?
  • Have you considered making music a part of your daily prayer time?
  • What’s one way you can challenge your concepts of prayer today?
