Who Do You Desire?

We live in a world that’s all about desire. You can find many pippy quotes like “Do what makes you happy,” and so forth. It’s part of our nature to desire and want to be desired. God is the number one thing to desire over everything else in life.
“In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” –Jeremiah 29:12-13 NLT

When God tells us to love him wholeheartedly and look for him with all we are, he wants us to put him above everything else. Instead of wanting to make the next promotion, we should be desiring God. Instead of trying to lose another 5 pounds, we should be desiring God…you get the idea. I’m not saying these are bad things. When God is at the center of our wants, everything else has a way of sorting itself out. God will show us what our next step in life is. Maybe that promotion is what he wants. Or, perhaps he wants you to spend more time with your family and not climb the ladder. You’ll only know by going to him and seeking.
“Rather than focusing on her mistakes, Jesus focuses on her desire for God.” (Messy Spirituality by Mike Yaconelli. p. 82)

Yaconelli is referring to Jesus’ interaction with the women at the well. We can all make mistakes. The biggest struggle is when we put socially acceptable things above God.

Thoughts to Ponder

  • Is God the thing you think the most about daily…do you desire him?
  • What’s one way you can shift your focus on him right now?
  • Can God help you with something going on in your life?
