Battle Belongs

This Sunday, we'll start wroship with a song we've sung since 2021 called Battle Belongs by Phil Whickham. I love this song because it reminds us that whatever life presents us, God is bigger. The song’s central message is about surrendering our battles to God and trusting in His power and sovereignty.

The song echoes the biblical theme that our struggles and battles are not fought in our own strength but in the strength and power of God. The act of surrendering to God and trusting Him in the midst of trials is a common thread throughout scripture.

“Battle Belongs” encapsulates the idea that believers can confidently rely on God during challenges, reflecting the message of trust and surrender found in numerous Bible passages. The song reminds us that God is always in control and that He fights our battles when we turn to Him in faith.

Here are some ways "Battle Belongs" connects with scripture:

God's Moves Mountains

Lyrics: “When all I see is the battle, You see my victory / When all I see is the mountain, You see a mountain moved."
  • Scripture:
    • 2 Chronicles 20:15 (NLT): “He said, ‘Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.’”
    • Matthew 17:20 (NLT): “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

God Can Do Anything

Lyrics: “And if You are for me, who can be against me? / For Jesus, there’s nothing impossible for You.”
  • Scripture:
    • Romans 8:31 (NLT): “What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?”
    • Luke 1:37 (NLT): “For nothing is impossible with God.”

Our Struggles are God's

Lyrics: “So when I fight, I’ll fight on my knees / With my hands lifted high / Oh God, the battle belongs to You.”
  • Scripture:
    • Exodus 14:14 (NLT): “The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”
    • Psalm 46:10 (NLT): “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”

God Goes Before Us

Lyrics: “Almighty fortress, You go before us / Nothing can stand against the power of our God / You shine in the shadows, You win every battle.”
  • Scripture:
    • Psalm 18:2 (NLT): “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.”
    • Deuteronomy 31:8 (NLT): “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
