Not Your Battle

I love the words of Surrounded by Michael W Smith: Some of the lyrics are:
The word says
"For the spirit of heaviness
Put on the garment of praise” [Isaiah 61:3]
That's how we fight our battles
...
This is how I fight my battles
It may look like I'm surrounded but I'm surrounded by You
What I love about this song is the last line I shared. When we feel surrounded by something against us, we need to remember God surrounds us.
“Many times we cannot solve problems, heal hurts, change circumstances, or win our own battles. We must kneel in prayer, then stand to see what He will do. We must leave room for God, staying calm and giving Him time to work.” –The Red Sea Rules, by Robert J. Morgan (Rule 5)

We cannot face whatever comes our way if we aren’t grounded in prayer. In the same way, we can’t win the “battles” of life until we realize that we aren’t the ones who win them. They aren’t actually ours to fight. God is not only our protector, he’s our defender. He will fight whenever it’s needed.

Read these words that were given to encourage the people of Israel from God:
“He said, ‘Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours but God’s. Tomorrow, march out against them. You will find them coming up through the ascent of Ziz at the end of the valley that opens into the wilderness of Jeruel. But you will not even need to fight. Take your positions, then stand still and watch the Lord’s victory. He is with you, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out against them tomorrow, for the Lord is with you!’” –2 Chronicles 20:15-17 NLT

The battle isn’t ours, so we don’t need to fight it. That can apply to work, school, home life, and friendships. No matter what’s happening, God will navigate things if we trust him.

Thoughts to Ponder

  • How can you remind yourself not to panic?
  • Do you tend to fear more or walk in faith?
  • What’s one thing you can do when you’re in a time of difficulty?
