Why Join the Church
In our Wesleyan Rooted sermon series, I've been talking each week about the membership Sunday we have coming up on October 13. So, you might be wondering why you should join the church.
What is required to join?
Anyone who has been baptized, at any age, in any Christian denomination (protestant or Catholic) may join the United Methodist Church. Membership is about making a statement, that we're your church home. You're done church shopping and you've decided to serve God through us. We do need you to fill out a form, so we can keep our records updated. If you're transferring from another church, we'll contact that church for you.
Do I get extra "stuff" for being a member?
We're not a club with a secret room. There are only 2 things that require membership: serving as an elected lay leader and voting on church matters. We as a church only vote when it comes to the selling of property or decisions of that magnitude. Everything else is managed by our elected leaders. The outgoing leaders elect the incoming leaders. Anyone can attend any meeting (except our personnel meeting which is closed for confidentiality) and ask questions.
What if I just want to be baptized?
We understand that church membership isn't for everyone. If you want to be baptized, or make a profession of faith, but not join the church, that's OK. We'd love to celebrate what God's been doing in your life with you! I can even schedule a baptism off church property if you'd like to have it at the beach or some place else that's special. Let's set up a time to talk about it.
Can I choose another day?
If October 13th doesn't work for your family, you can choose another day on the form. We'll work with you and schedule a time that's good for you.
If you consider Fleming Island UMC to be your church home, I then pray about making it official. You're not signing your name in blood and there's no contract. It's just a way to make a step in your life, from the spectator's side to the participant's side. If you have questions, let's talk more about it. That's what I'm here for. :)
