Hurricane Helene Response

Hurricane Helene left many of us binge watching the weather channel last week and thankful that Florida made it through with minimal damage, especially the Big Bend area. That thankfulness was quickly diminished as the reports came in from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee.

UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) is one of the few organizations allowed into disaster zones alongside FEMA. They put out this statement on their website:

Hurricane Helene has devastated parts of the southeastern U.S., bringing catastrophic wind, rain and flash flooding to many states and communities.

In response, UMCOR is coordinating with affected annual conferences and supporting their local relief efforts. UMCOR has awarded solidarity grants to the North and South Georgia annual conferences with multiple grants in process for other annual conferences.

Additionally, UMCOR-trained Early Response Teams (ERTs) are coordinating efforts to support the removal of debris, tarping of roofs, and cleaning out of homes in hard-hit areas.

The incredible thing about UMCOR is that 100% of your donation goes to those who need it. United Methodist Conferences send out teams to volunteers who are trained as ERTs with supplies that have been provided through donations. This not only helps UMCOR respond quickly, it also helps with long-term efforts, as churches start to make connections in the community for rebuilding over the years to come.

In the past, as they assess projects that can have less trained persons, they will start to reach out through our connection for what is needed.

Donating to UMCOR through our church means you're helping the communities that need assistance now receive what they need, and that in the future, support continues. Choose UMCOR from the drop down list to donate.
