Pastoral Announcement
A Season of Change
This past Sunday, Nicole, our Staff-Parish Relations Committee Chair, shared on Announcement Sunday that we will have a pastoral change in July.
For those who may not be familiar with the United Methodist itinerant system, pastors are appointed each July for one year at a time. In December, each pastor and SPRC shares with the conference and bishop whether they feel called to remain or whether it may be time for a change. There is always a great deal of prayer and discernment that surrounds this process.

A Call to Serve in a New Way
As I shared on Sunday, God has placed it on AJ’s and my heart that, after 10 years, the time is right to go deeper into my calling to serve in extension ministry—something I have felt drawn to since entering ministry. Being “sent” by God is at the heart of being an Elder, but it is also some of the most challenging work we are called to do.
I spoke with Mike this week, and I know you’re going to love him. He’s finishing his ninth year of ministry, and like me, he is a second-generation pastor. He’s very excited to meet all of you and even has ties to Jacksonville from years ago.

How You Can Help During This Transition
- Pray for Mike, his family, and this time of transition. Moving to a new community is stressful, especially with children adjusting to new schools and making new friends. Pray that their move goes smoothly and that they feel at home quickly.
- Ask God how you can use your gifts to serve. We have some areas where we’re short on volunteers—particularly in children’s ministry, the Sunday morning tech team, and office help. Let’s fill those gaps before Mike arrives!
- Take ownership of your discipleship now. I’ve been preaching and teaching about the importance of spiritual growth all year. Now is the time to engage so you’re ready for the opportunities Mike will offer. Consider forming a small group, joining the Wednesday night study, or finding another way to grow alongside others.
- Pray about stepping up your financial giving. I know this is a big ask given the current economy, but there’s nothing more stressful for a new pastor than having to address giving right after arriving. If you’re able, even $25 a week can make a big difference. Consider setting up automatic giving online to help provide a strong start.
Answering Some Questions
- Will we still attend after June? No. In the United Methodist tradition, pastors step away from the congregation they are leaving to honor the authority and pastoral responsibility of the new pastor. This helps you form a strong connection with Mike. Don’t worry—I won’t be unfriending you on Facebook! But anything pastoral will be referred to Mike.
- When will we move? We will be moving out of the parsonage at the end of June. There are a few projects to complete at the house before the Moxleys arrive. If you enjoy “fix-it” projects, please let me know! We will be relocating to Lake Asbury once our home is ready.
A Grateful Heart
Our family has been so blessed to serve you. Fleming Island UMC has been my favorite congregation so far (don’t tell the others!). You have embraced us, loved us, and lived life alongside us in beautiful ways. If I could have stayed with you and fully pursued this next calling, I would have gladly done both.
Sent by God
As Galatians 1:1 reminds us, Paul was sent by God—not by human authority. I, too, have answered God’s call to be a sent pastor, and now God is sending me to serve the Church beyond these walls. Please keep this ministry in your prayers and join me in trusting all that God will do.
“Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead.” (Galatians 1:1, NIV)
