Spiritual Workout

“Train yourself to be godly. Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and the life to come.” — 1 Timothy 4:7-8
I know it’s the season of Thanksgiving, a time for good food, family, and gratitude, but lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about health. Earlier this year, I hurt my back, and while that definitely slowed down my exercise routine, it didn’t slow down my eating one bit! It’s been a good reminder that I must be intentional about how I take care of my body. I can’t just hope my health takes care of itself. And honestly, the same is true for our spiritual health.
As we move into the holidays, we often don’t pay much attention to how much (or what) we eat or drink. Then we get to January and think, “Wait... where did those seven pounds come from?”  And if we’re not careful, we can do the same thing with our spiritual health. We get busy, skip the things that nourish us spiritually, and then one day realize we feel a little empty inside.  We live in a world that loves to track everything: our steps, heart rate, calories, and even how well we sleep. My watch will even sometimes buzz to remind me to stand up or breathe!
But here’s a couple of questions worth asking: How are you tracking your spiritual health? How are you staying aware of your prayer life, your time in Scripture, or your connection to God and others?
As you enjoy this Thanksgiving season, take time to give thanks, eat well, and care for yourself. But also take a few moments to check in on your soul. Because when your spirit is healthy, life just feels lighter, fuller, and more joyful.
