In the River

We're kicking off worship on Sunday with a song we've been singing at Fleming Island UMC since 2018 called "In the River" by Jesus Culture. This worship song captures God as our life-giver and his presence refreshes our soul.

The song draws heavily on the images of the Bible to help us express the life, freedom, and joy that only comes from the presence of God. Let's look at some of them:

Lyrics: “There is a river where goodness flows”

• Scripture:
  • Psalm 46:4 (NLT): “A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High.”

Lyrics: “There is a fountain that drowns sorrows” / “Nothing can stop this joy, we’re dancing in the streets”

• Scripture:
  • Isaiah 12:3 (NLT): “With joy you will drink deeply from the fountain of salvation!”
  • Psalm 30:11 (NLT): “You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy.”

Lyrics: “Up from the ground, we feel it now” / “Spring up a well, spring up a well in me”

• Scripture:
  • John 7:38 (NLT): “Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”
  • John 4:14 (NLT): “But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

  • Ezekiel 47:9 (NLT): “There will be swarms of living things wherever the water of this river flows. Fish will abound in the Dead Sea, for its waters will become fresh. Life will flourish wherever this water flows.”
