This week, I want to reflect on the song Goodness of God. I love this song because it roots to how God is always there, especially when life is busy.

“Goodness of God” is a worship anthem by Bethel Music, originally performed by Jenn Johnson. Released in 2019 as part of Bethel Music’s Victory album, the song has touched millions with its heartfelt expression of gratitude and trust in God’s unchanging goodness. The lyrics reflect a deeply personal yet universally relatable testimony of God’s faithfulness and kindness throughout life’s journey. It’s a declaration of trust in God’s character, even in the midst of uncertainty or difficulty.

The theme of God’s goodness is woven throughout Scripture, and the song draws on several key passages:

Biblical Connections:

  • Psalm 23:6 (NLT): “Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.”
    • This verse echoes the heart of the song, reminding us that God’s goodness and love are constants in our lives, following us through every moment, season, and challenge
  • Psalm 100:5 (NLT): “For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.”
    • The song celebrates the enduring nature of God’s goodness and faithfulness, not only in our lives but as a legacy passed down through generations.
  • Lamentations 3:22-23 (NLT): “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.”
    • These verses capture the hope in God’s daily renewal of grace, reflected in the song’s assurance that “all my life, You have been faithful.”
  • Romans 8:28 (NLT): “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”
    • This verse aligns with the song’s affirmation of trust in God’s plan and goodness, even when circumstances seem unclear.
  • James 1:17 (NLT): “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.”
    • This verse reinforces the unchanging nature of God’s goodness, as celebrated in the song.

Reflection and Application

  • Pause to reflect on specific moments when you’ve experienced God’s goodness.
  • Meditate on the Scriptures above and how they affirm the truths in the song.
  • Declare your trust in God’s unchanging nature, even in difficult times.

The song is not just a reminder of what God has done but also a call to trust in His ongoing faithfulness and to live a life of gratitude and surrender.
