Our church first sang Oceans in November of 2015, but I wonder if you've ever thought about the song's works and how it relates to scripture? I love how this song speaks about life's struggles, but that we are called to step out in faith.  It is a powerful worship song that speaks about faith, trust, and stepping out into the unknown with God.

Below are some key themes and their biblical connections:

Themes in "Oceans"

  • Faith in Uncertainty – The song encourages stepping out in faith even when circumstances seem overwhelming.
  • Trusting God’s Guidance – It speaks about relying on God to lead us where we wouldn’t go on our own.
  • God’s Presence in Deep Waters – Imagery of deep waters symbolizes trials and the unknown, but God’s presence sustains us.
  • Spiritual Growth & Surrender – The lyrics express a desire for deeper intimacy with God, even when it requires leaving comfort behind.
  • Courage to Walk on Water – Drawing from Peter’s story, the song reminds us that faith enables us to walk where we normally could not.

Biblical Connections:

  • Matthew 14:25-31 (NLT) – Peter Walking on Water: Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”
“Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”
    • This passage is the primary inspiration for the song. It reflects stepping out in faith despite fear and trusting that Jesus will sustain us.
  • Isaiah 43:2 (NLT) – God’s Presence in the Waters: When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.
    • This verse reinforces the theme that no matter how deep or overwhelming our struggles are, God is with us.
  • Psalm 69:1-3 (NLT) – Crying Out to God in Desperation: Save me, O God, for the floodwaters are up to my neck. Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire; I can’t find a foothold. I am in deep water, and the floods overwhelm me.
    • Similar to the song’s lyrics, this Psalm reflects calling on God when feeling overwhelmed and needing His rescue.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NLT) – Walking by Faith: For we live by believing and not by seeing.
    • The song’s message aligns with this verse, encouraging believers to step into the unknown, trusting in God’s unseen hand.
  • Deuteronomy 31:8 (NLT) – God Goes Before Us: Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.
    • The assurance of God leading us into uncharted waters without forsaking us is at the heart of Oceans.

Reflection and Application

This song serves as a call to deeper faith. It reminds us that even when God leads us beyond our comfort zone, He remains our strength and guide. It encourages surrender, trust, and the willingness to go wherever He calls. Here's some thoughts for reflection:

  • Where is God Calling You? Have you ever felt God calling you to step into something unknown or uncomfortable? What was your response?
  • When have you felt overwhelmed or unsure, but experienced God’s presence guiding you?
  • What are some “borders” or limits you’ve placed on your trust in God? (Fear, doubt, control, past experiences?)
  • What distractions or fears tend to pull your focus away from God?
  • What area of your life do you need to surrender to God’s control?
