A Cut Above
by Faith Parry on August 18th, 2023
I have said it more times than I can count, "Peter is my favorite disciple of the 12." It's not because he because the leader of the church; it's because he is so boldly himself and often messes it up. From the beginning of Peter's journey, he steps out and doesn't appear to think twice about it. "He begins a good work in us, he starts changing us, but the finishing process is a more-than-a-lifeti... Read More

Complex Mix of Emotions
by Faith Parry on August 17th, 2023
I’ve talked about emotions a fair number of times. One thing I may not have said is that for most of my adult life, I have struggled to battle feelings of Anxiety and Depression. I don’t get anxious to speak in front of people; that comes naturally. However, I pray obsessively over pending conflicts, worried about doing or saying the wrong thing. I am also very hard on myself, so I take negative c... Read More

What Our Method Is
by Faith Parry on August 16th, 2023
Have you ever wondered who does what around the church? Methodists got their name in the 1800s because we were methodical in our spiritual growth. It's not surprising that we're also methodical in our ways of governing the church and dividing the leadership among many. Every year, we go through a process called nominations, where I gather with some people to pray over a worksheet we need to fill ou... Read More

Don’t be a Monk
by Faith Parry on August 16th, 2023
Have you ever been to a spiritual retreat or conference, and felt so connected with God, then had to come back to the real world? You may have felt like it was a complete letdown and been frustrated. You might have even thought, “Life would be so much simpler if I didn’t have to deal with people and just spend my time with God.”That’s the point of people who join monasteries in different religions... Drinking, Misfits, and Sinners
by Faith Parry on August 15th, 2023
Sunday, we reflected on Jesus getting “in trouble” with the religious leaders because he had a feast with what they called “misfits, sinners, and scum.” Let’s look at it from two different translations: “Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them. But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious... Read More

Follow Me
by Faith Parry on August 14th, 2023
The phrase from Jesus, “Follow Me,” has a strong image for many of us. For me, I first think about Jesus calling his disciples from the lakeshore: “One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you ho... Read More

Making It Your Place
by Faith Parry on August 10th, 2023
God has blessed us with an abundance of new faces over the past 6 months. It causes me to be at a loss for words. I have been praying for God to bring a revival through Fleming Island United Methodist since I found out I would be coming as the pastor in May of 2022. I have prayed over the names of those who worship with us, those who stopped worshipping with us, and our entire community. I have as... Read More

FIUMC Students & VBS
by Katie Strickland on August 10th, 2023
As you may imagine putting on Vacation Bible School takes many volunteers. This year we had 46 volunteers. Thirteen of our amazing volunteers were students in grades 7th through 12th grade and we couldn't do VBS without them. They bring a level of energy and excitement that most of us adults just can't match. I know the kids and the adult volunteers appreciated them spending the week with us.... Read More

Breathe and Praise
by Faith Parry on August 10th, 2023
Some things in life are given. For example, if we’re going to be healthy, we need to eat healthy food, drink lots of water, exercise, and get 8 hours of sleep at night. If we eat only junk food and soda, and sit on the couch watching binge-watching TV at 4:00 am, we’ll probably feel the effects of those life choices eventually. The same goes for our spiritual lives. Praise and thanking Good is good... Read More

Perspective of Praise
by Faith Parry on August 10th, 2023
A person's perspective in life is everything. For example, it will feel cool when you've been outside in 100º weather and walk into a room that is 76 or even 78 degrees. However, if you've been inside cleaning and working around the house and it's 76 degrees, it'll feel hot quickly. The home temperature's "comfort" depends on your perspective. The same thing can happen in our spiritual lives if we ... Read More

God-Sightings
by Katie Strickland on August 9th, 2023
What is a God-Sighting you may ask? Well, each morning during Vacation Bible School, we ask the kids to share some way they saw God at work the day before. Their crew leaders then wrote what had been shared on a star and the stars were hung on the walls in the sanctuary. By the end of the week we had over 68 stars and some of those stars had multiple God-Sightings on them. Our God-Sighting ranged from ... Read More
